Ranking for Search Terms

Updated: Aug 23, 2022

Index Terms

In information retrieval, an index term is a term that captures the essence of the topic of a document. Index terms make up a controlled vocabulary for use in bibliographic records. They are an integral part of bibliographic control, which is the function by which libraries collect, organize and disseminate documents.

Keywords

A keyword is a term used in digital marketing to describe a word or a group of words an Internet user uses to perform a search in a search engine or search bar. In an SEO strategy, keywords are very important and should be the core of any copy written for the web (present in the content, titles and SEO elements).

Your SEO keywords are the keywords and phrases in your content that make it possible for people to find you via search engines. A platform that is well optimized for search engines “speaks the same language” as its potential visitor base with keywords for SEO that help connect searchers to your work.

Long Tail SEO

Long-tail keywords are keywords or key phrases that are more specific – and usually longer – than more commonly used keywords. Long-tail keywords get less search traffic, but will usually have a higher conversion value, as they are more specific.

Short Tail SEO

Short tail keywords are search terms that are made up of no more than three words. They refer to very broad topics rather than specific ones. For example, “running shoes” is an example of a short tail keyword while “best running shoes for winter” is an example of a long tail keyword.

Call to Action Keywords

A call to action (abbreviated as CTA) in marketing is a term used to prompt an immediate response or encourage a sale. Generally, a call to action is an imperative verb. The action isn't always limited to a sale.

The call to action is a key element for any marketing material, acting as a signpost that lets the user know what to do next. Without a clear CTA, the user may not know the next steps to take to purchase a product or sign up for a newsletter and is likely to leave the platform without accomplishing their task.

Aligning Keyword & Content Types with Business Goals

  1. Define your goals

  2. Do preliminary keyword research

  3. Align your goals and keyword types with the right content

Typical Business Goals:

  • Lead generation

  • Traffic, return readership

  • Sales

  • Backlinks

Find Keywords that Align:

  • What kinds of content would attract the people you want to visit your site, and then figure out what types of keywords best align with that type of content, OR

  • What kinds of keywords your audience would use, and then create content that suits those keywords.
